7 Tips on how to prepare for your Newborn Session

This week on the blog we wanted to share 7 tips on how to prepare for your newborn session. We hope that this advice will help anyone that has booked or is thinking about booking a newborn shoot with us.

Newborn photography is one of the most amazing photo sessions to have. Not only because you will capture all the beautiful details of your newborn, but you will have photographic evidence of how small they once were. Time fly’s, so these photos really are precious.

We know having a baby is tiring work, therefore we aim to make everything as easy and smooth as possible for you. Our photographers are fully trained in newborn photography meaning they understand how to read signs from your baby and communicate them back to you to help everyone involved with the shoot. For example, they know when baby needs that extra feed. They know when baby is fully settled and can continue with the posing undisturbed. And they know when baby is getting ready to do a poo explosion on set. Our photographers are amazing and although it can be a daunting experience to hand over your little one, these ladies are the best! You’re in very safe hands.

Top tips

  1. Feed baby before arriving at the studio. We would say no more than 15 minutes before you set off to our Horsforth studio. This saves time once you’re at the studio so we can jump straight into the shoot.
  2. Loosen babies nappy after feeding as this prevents any disruptions if they do fall asleep right away.
  3. Dress them in an outfit which is easy to remove. Unless you are wanting family shots at the start in which case dress baby in the clothes you would like these pictures in.
  4. If you are booking additional time for family shots please all wear matching socks, preferably white or black (not including baby obviously!) This helps us when it comes to editing. Also think about your outfits. Matching colours are better like all white. It creates the best after look once images are ready to be printed. A timeless, fresh, look. Avoid bold colours and patterns and avoid anything with text on.
  5. If siblings attend please bring something to distract them whilst your new arrival has their first photo shoot. A standard newborn shoot can last between 2 – 2.5 hours so this is a long time to ask children to keep still and quiet.
  6. If baby uses a dummy please bring this with you. We are happy to use the dummy and just judge when to remove for them amazing shots.
  7. Be sure to wipe babies face before the shoot. Nobody wants spit up or bogies in their photos. Keep extra wipes and muslins near by throughout the shoot incase a tidy up is needed.
